Hilton Head rentals with a heated private pool
Most listings that say pool mean unheated. Several that say heated mean heated for an extra fee, with two days notice. Here is what to check.
Why this page exists
If you are booking Hilton Head between November and May, the pool is the water your family will actually swim in. The ocean will not be.
The problem is that pool on a rental listing covers at least four different things, and only one of them is a private heated pool you can use in April. We have been on the owner side of this for years and the confusion costs people their holiday.
This page is the checklist. It applies to any Hilton Head rental, not just ours.
First distinction

Second distinction
What "heated" actually means
Three quite different arrangements all get described as a heated pool.
Heat included
The pool is heated as part of your rate, at least during the months when it matters. This is what you want and it is the least common.
Heat available for a fee
Common. The pool has a heater, and using it costs extra, often as a daily or weekly charge. The fee is sometimes disclosed at booking and sometimes only when you ask.
Heat available on request, with notice
Also common, and the one that catches people. A pool takes time to warm up. If the heater is only switched on when you ask, and you ask on arrival, you may be two days into a seven-day trip before the water is usable.
How it is heated matters too
Heat pumps are cheaper to run but slower, and they lose efficiency as the air gets colder, which is precisely when you need them. Gas heaters warm water quickly and cost more per day. A gas-heated pool in March is a different proposition from a heat-pump pool in March.
Timing
When you actually need it
The honest answer is that in July and August a heated pool is irrelevant, because everything is warm. It earns its money in the shoulder months, which are also the best value time to visit.

The checklist
Nine questions, asked in writing
Send these to any Hilton Head rental you are considering. A good owner or agency answers all nine without hesitating. A vague answer to question three is your signal to move on.
Where the pool houses are
Private pools cluster in the residential parts of the island rather than the resort cores, because they are attached to houses rather than villas and condos.
Practically, that means the Folly Field and north end area, parts of Palmetto Dunes and Forest Beach, and pockets of Sea Pines. Villas and condos usually offer community or resort pools instead, which are rarely heated.
If a heated private pool is your requirement, you are looking for a detached house, and that narrows the search considerably before you have even checked dates.
Disclosure
We own one of them
122 Sandcastle Court has a heated, fenced private pool on the ground level, three blocks from the Folly Field boardwalk. Six bedrooms, sleeps 22, and there is an elevator.
Pool heat is included September through April at around 88°F, which is the window that matters. For a group with children, that is the difference between a shoulder-season week that works and one that does not — more for organisers here.
Two details relevant to everything above. The pool sits under the house with a roll-up door, so half of it is shaded at midday in July and it is usable in the rain in April. And there is a full bathroom on the pool level, which is the ninth question on the list for a reason.

Common questions
Do most Hilton Head rentals with pools heat them?
No. Most do not heat at all, and many that can will charge separately for it.
How long does a pool take to warm up?
Depends on the heater and the air temperature, but plan on a day or more. This is why the notice question matters.
What temperature should a heated pool hold?
Most people are comfortable from about 82°F. Ask what the pool actually holds in the month you are visiting rather than what the thermostat is set to.
Is a community pool ever heated?
Occasionally, but assume not, and check for seasonal closures too.
Do I need a heated pool in June?
No. From June to September the ocean and any pool will both be warm.
Is a covered pool worse?
The opposite, in this climate. Shade in high summer and shelter in shoulder season both extend how much you use it.
